Program Notes

Hypnosis was composed during the initial U.S. lockdown phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. It felt natural in this period of seclusion to return to the instrument that began my musical journey many years ago. I was inspired to compose a series of short works for the piano. Hypnosis was the first of those works to be completed. While it is not intended to be programmatic, the music suggests feelings of anxiety and restlessness akin to what many people felt during the pandemic. I would say there is also a comic element to the music; the main theme turns in on itself so hypnotically that it drives the whole piece to a breaking point.

A recording will be coming soon.
